As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, has embarked on another medical outreach programme to Hayin Banki community in Kaduna State. The event, which took place today, 30 November 2024, witnessed the donation of medical items, treatment of persons with ailments and presentation of lectures on healthcare. The outreach was the second after the medical outreach to the Barkallahu community.
The Commandant of the Institute, Air Vice Marshal Sani Labaran Rabe, stated that it was a thing of great pride and a sense of purpose to flag off the second medical outreach after the successful one at Barkallahu community. He added that the intervention was AFIT’s way of “fulfilling our commitment to improving the health and well-being of our host communities”. He described Hayin Banki as an integral part of AFIT surrounding community.
AVM Rabe disclosed that, “this outreach is not just a one-day event; it is a testament to AFIT’s dedication to supporting and uplifting the lives of the people who live around us”. He added that, “as a military institution with a strong academic foundation, our responsibilities go beyond education and research. We see it as our duty to contribute actively to the health and welfare of our neighbours, ensuring that our impact resonates beyond the confines of our campus.”
The medical outreach included medical consultations covering general medical advice, surgical interventions, screening for hepatitis C and HIV, maternal and child care, distribution of mosquito nets and nutritional support for malnourished children. The outreach, which was led by AFIT medical consultant, Wing Commander JO Ovosi, was made possible through partnership with Kaduna State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
Highlights of the event included the presentation of mosquito-treated net to a pregnant woman and feeding of a baby with the ready-to-use therapeutic food (RTUFs) by the Commandant. The outreach was also attended by prominent members of the Hayin Banki community including Maigirima Sarki Hayin Banki, Alhaji Mamud Shehu Galadima; Chief Imam of Hayin Banki, Mallam Abubakar Abdulsalam; title holders, heads and traditional leaders of Hayin Banki as well as other residents of the community.
