In 2018 AFIT was transformed into university status and various departments were given approval to start their respective programmes under the Nigeria University Commission (NUC), making it the first institution to be accredited by both NUC and NBTE. Among the departments that were approved to start programme is the Automotive Engineering Department. The Department took off during the 2019/2020 academic session with the first set of students at 100 level.
The Automotive Engineering Department took off with three (3) academic staff, EngrDr Ibrahim Yahuza as the pioneer HOD with EngrDr Bashir Garba Ibrahim and MrAbubakarIsah. Eight (8) administrative staff and three (3) technical staff.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the Automotive Engineering Department is to become a Centre of Excellence in Automotive Engineering disciplines and for training out graduates with high academic knowledge and adequate practical background for the creation, transfer and application of scientific knowledge for the advancement of mankind in a friendly, interactive and multicultural environment. It is aimed at turning out engineers capable of solving local Nigerian problems in addition to global challenges that they might be confronted with. The curriculum of this Department covers the following specific areas:
- Foundation years at 100 and 200 levels common with other Engineering Departments in the Faculty;
- Workshop practice, laboratory work and tutorial;
- Design projects with a bias towards local applications;
- Broad-based engineering courses and interaction between students and professionals in industry and government;
- Project in the final year in which the students work independently under the supervision of academic staff members;
- Special skills and in-depth study in a particular area of the programme through optional courses and electives; and
- Adequate knowledge in the areas of engineering management, economics and law.
Aim and Objectives of the Programme
The aim of Automotive Engineering training in AFIT is to develop engineers with skills in the presentation of scientific and engineering philosophies to cultivate necessary technological tools (machines, skills and techniques) for the provision of needs of material goods and services for sustainable development. The objectives of the Department are:
- To train Engineers in different fields of Automotive Engineering with high academic standard coupled with adequate practical experience, to be able to meet challenges of a developing economy and sufficiently tackle common day-to-day engineering problems.
- To produce graduates with broad-based knowledge in general studies, management and humanities, all of which enhance their understanding, contribution and relevance to the society.
- To encourage close contact between the students and their Lecturers through Seminars, Workshops, Office consultation, Tutorial and Laboratory works etc.
- To produce graduates with high academic standard coupled with adequate practical experiences which can meet the challenges of a developing economy and sufficiently tackle common day-to-day Engineering problems.
- To provide an excellent balance between the essential principles of Engineering Science and their applications to the creative world of engineering practice.
