AVM CN Udeagulu
Commandant, Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna.
Air Vice Marshal Cletus Nwannebuike Udeagulu was born on 17 July 1965 at Eke in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State. He attended Saint Anthony Primary School and Saint Paul Secondary School, both in Eke. In 1983, Cletus was admitted into the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of Regular Course 36, the pioneer course of the Degree programme in NDA. He studied Physics and graduated with a First Class Honours in 1989. Air Vice Marshal Cletus Udeagulu has held several appointments in the NAF, notably OiC Electronic Data Processing Department in the then Technical Training Group (TTG), now Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT); Staff Officer II Manpower at Directorate of Air Engineering, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force; Commander 107 NAF Camp Lagos; Dean School of Post Graduate Studies AFIT; Principal Director, Air Force Research and Development Centre, and Director Research and Development, HQ NAF. He is presently the Commandant Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna. Udeagulu has made several sterling contributions to the development of the Nigerian Air Force in particular and the Nation in general. As a young officer in 1994, Cletus developed a computer programme for the compilation of students’ results at AFIT. The programme helped reduce paper works on students’ records and kept good track of students’ records even after graduation. Also in 2001, at Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Cletus developed another Computer programme for the management of personnel records, including management of postings and transfers. The programme helped to streamline all postings, removing errors of double posting, posting to an occupied office, and posting to offices inappropriate for an officer’s rank and seniority. In 2006, following a spate of air crashes, a Federal Committee on Aviation Safety was set up and Cletus was made the Secretary of the Committee. He worked tirelessly with the Committee to produce a blueprint for the management of the Nigerian Aviation Industry, and for his contributions Cletus was given a commendation from the Office of the Secretary to the Federal Government. Perhaps most important of his contributions is his quest to bequeath Unmmaned Air Vehicle (UAV) technology to the NAF and the Nation. In 2009, shortly after graduation from Cranfield University, Cletus led a team of officers to design and produce Amebo II UAV, a resounding successful project. In Nov 2012, Cletus was made the Co-ordinator of the Nigerian Air Force Optimising Local Engineering (NAF OLE) Team. He led the team made up of both Nigerians and expatriate staff to design and produce Nigeria’s first experimental UAV, codenamed GULMA. The Gulma UAV was unveiled to Nigerians and to the World on 17 Dec 2013 by then President, Dr GoodLuck Ebele Jonathan. He subsequently developed the UAV to what it is now, the TSAIGUMI UAV. Since the unveiling, the UAV has been receiving rave reviews both for the excellent design and for the short timeline from its conception to unveiling, 12 months. The TSAIGUMI is on the last stages of its test flights and will soon go into operations in Nigeria and other friendly countries. When operational, TSIAGUMI will help in the fight against insurgency/terrorism, protection of oil pipeline and offshore installations, power line monitoring, and disaster management. Cletus is married to Mrs Chika Esther Udeagulu and is blessed with 3 kids.
