Statistics is indispensable in this modern age, aptly known as “the age of planning”. The government of most countries around the world are constantly researching to improve its economic development. Statistical data and techniques of statistical analysis are immensely useful in solving economic problems such as wages, price, time series analysis, demand analysis. The career opportunities and job prospects in Statistics include: Lecturer/Professor, Content Analyst, Statistics Trainer, Data Scientist, Consultant, Auditor, Actuary, Algorithm Designer, Data Miner, Research Analyst, Economist, Financial Analyst or Advisor, Market Researcher, Statistics Engineer, Biostatistics, Epidemiologist etc.

Philosophy, Aims, and Objectives of the B.Sc. Degree Programme

  1. To instil in students a sense of enthusiasm for Statistics, an appreciation of its application in different areas and to involve them in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying.
  2. To provide students a broad and balanced foundation in Statistics knowledge and practical skills in computer science.
  3. To develop in students, the ability to apply their Statistics knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in Statistics and to humanity.
  4. To develop in students, through an education in Statistics, a range of transferable skills of value in Statistics related and non-Statistics related employment.
  5. To provide students with knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas of Statistics or multi-disciplinary areas involving Statistics.
  6. To generate in students an appreciation of the importance of Statistics in an industrial, economic, environmental and social context.
  7. At the end of the programme, the students will be more creative and more adoptable to the need of the society.

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Studying mathematics helps you develop skills in logical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making, which are valued by employers across many job sectors. Mathematics graduates are respected for their excellent quantitative and problem solving abilities and win a wide range of rewarding positions in the public and private sectors. The career opportunities and job prospects in mathematics include:

Lecturer/Professor, Numerical Analyst, Business Analyst, Financial Analyst, Research Analyst, Operation Analyst, Actuarial Analyst, Data Analyst, Research Scientist, Secondary School Teacher, Data Scientist, Chartered Accountant, Software Engineer etc.

Objectives of the Department

Admission Requirements

UTME

The entry requirements shall be at least credit level passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics and Physics to form the core subjects with credit in any other two relevant science subjects at the Senior Secondary School Certificate or its equivalent. In addition, an acceptable pass in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), with appropriate subject combination is required for admission into 100 Level.

Direct Entry

  1. Candidates with at least two A level passes (graded A-E) at the GCE / IJMB Advanced Level in relevant subjects (Mathematics, Physics, and Further Mathematics) may be admitted into 200-level.
  2. Holders of HND with at least lower credits in relevant disciplines who possess UTME requirements may be admitted to 200 level.
  3. NCE Holder with at least two credit in relevant subjects and who possess the UTME requirements may be admitted to 200 level.
  4. OND Holder with upper credit in relevant disciplines who possess the UTME requirement may be admitted to 200 level.

Course Requirements

Courses terminologies:

i) Core/Compulsory Course:

A course which every student must compulsorily take and pass in any particular programme at a particular level of study

 ii) Elective Course:

A course that students take within or outside the faculty. Students may graduate without passing the course provided the minimum credit unit for the course had been attained.

iii) Optional Course

A course which students can take based on interest and may count towards the minimum credit unit required for graduation.

 iv) Pre-requisite Course

A course which student must take and pass before taking a particular course at a higher level.

 v) Required Course

A course that you take at a level of study and must be passed before graduation.

vi) For each course specified, the categories to which it belongs, the weights (units) attached to each course and the level/year they could be offered on the programme is indicated.

vii) A unit of course is defined as one contact hour of lecture/tutorial or seminar.

viii) A student must take and pass a minimum of 15 and maximum of 24 credit units of courses in any given semester. A student must accumulate at least 30 units per level to qualify for graduation.

ix) All students for the four-year programme are required to take and pass for General studies (GST) courses before graduation.

x) A student must obtain at least 75% attendance in each course registered for to be eligible to sit for the end of examinations in the course.

xi) To graduate, students must register for courses as specified in this handbook and accumulate a minimum of 120 credit units/hours in total. The minimum period allowed for candidates to complete the programme is 6 semester or 3 years for DE students and 8 semester or 4 years for UME students and the maximum period is 10 semesters or 5 years for DE and 12 semesters or 6 years for UME students.
