Course Requirements

Every student is expected to register for all courses during the time stipulated which is usually within the first two weeks of resumption, except where otherwise stated. Late registration will be allowed for a period of time but the students will be charged a late registration fee. All course registration shall be done at the department and the Head of Department will sign for all courses registered. The Department shall ensure that students re-register for all previously failed courses that require a pass and meet the prescribed requirements for each course registered. Students are not allowed to sit for examinations in courses for which they have not been registered. Any culprits will be appropriately disciplined. Application for adding or dropping a course must be made and certified by the Registrar after obtaining approval of the Head of the Department, not later than four weeks before the final examination in each semester.

All courses are to be sub-divided into more or less self-sufficient and logically consistent packages that are taught within a semester and examined at the end of that particular semester. Credits are weights attached to a course. One credit is equivalent to one hour per week per semester of 15 weeks of lectures or three hours of laboratory/studio/workshop work per week per semester of 15 weeks or two hours of seminar per week per semester of 15 weeks or four weeks of industrial attachment. The minimum number of credit units for the award of a degree is 120 units, subject to the usual Departmental and Faculty requirements. The minimum and maximum credit load per semester is 18 and 24 credit units respectively.

For ease of identification, course numbers can be prefixed by a three-character programme/subject code. Thus, the course code is in the form: DEP LNJ (where the three-letter code DEP identifies the programme, ‘L’ in LNJ represents the level of the course (1 or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 for all undergraduate courses) and NJ is a two-digit numbering of courses. Thus, for example, MME201 is a 200-Level course with number 0 representing compulsory/core course/area of specialty in the Department (It can also be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 etc) and 1 is the departmental numbering for Metallurgical and Materials Engineering programme for first semester.

Standard Course Terminologies

Core/Compulsory Course: A course which every student must take and pass in any particular programme at a particular level of study.

Elective Course: A course that students take within or outside the faculty. Students may graduate without passing the course provided the minimum credit unit for the course has been attained.

Optional Course: A course which students can take based on interest and may count towards the minimum credit unit required for graduation.

Pre-requisite Course: A course which a student must take and pass before taking a particular course at a higher level.

Required Course: A course which a student must take and pass before graduation but the course is not taught in the student’s department.

Grading of Courses

Grading of courses shall be done by a combination of percentage marks and letter grades translated into a graduated system of Grade Point.

Mark (%) Letter Grade Grade Point
70 – 100 A 5
60 – 69 B 4
50 – 59 C 3
45 – 49 D 2
40 – 44 E 1
<40 F 0

A total of 75% attendance is required by student before he/she can be allowed to sit for examination for any course. Any student who fails to sit for the examination of a course without a satisfactory reason earns the grade of “F”. In cases where student was unable to sit for a particular examination due to health challenges, it is expected/required that a sick letter/medical report duly satisfied by the Institute Clinic is presented to the Department/Faculty. In such circumstance, the student can then be deregistered for such course.  At the end of every semester, the Grade Point Average (GPA) system shall be used to determine a student’s standing. The GPA is computed by multiplying the units of each course by the grade point achieved by the student for that course and then dividing the total for all the courses by the total number of units for all the courses taken in the semester. The Cumulative Grade Point Average over a period of semesters is calculated in the same manner. To calculate a student’s GPA (CGPA), grades obtained in ALL courses whether compulsory or optional and whether passed or failed must be included in the computation. When a student repeats the same course more than once before passing or substitutes another course for a failed optional course, grades scored at each and all attempts shall be used for the computation of the GPA.

Course Units Grade Point Units x Grade Point
C1 U1 GP1 U1 x GP1
C2 U2 GP2 U2 x GP2
Ci Ui GPi Ui x GPi
CN UN GPN UN x GPN
TOTAL TNU   TUGP

Computation of Grade Point Average and Cumulative Grade Point Average

The process of calculating the GPA is as follows:

Akinropo had the following scores in 3 subjects offered in a semester as shown below:

  1. General Physical Chemistry 80%     –           A.
  2. Basic Engineering Drawing 68%     –           B.
  3. Elementary Mathematics 52%     –           C.
Subject Credit Unit Grade GP

CUGP

(CU X GP)

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e)
General Physical Chemistry 3 A 5.00 15.00
Basic Engineering Drawing 2 B 4.00 8.00
Elementary Mathematics 3 C 3.00 9.00
TNU 8
TUGP 32.00

Therefore, Akinropo’s GPA for the current semester is 32/8 = 4.00

CGPA Calculation

The process of calculating the CGPA for 2 semesters is as follows:

Akinropo’s TUGP for the 1st semester = 32.00

Akinropo’s TNU for the 1st semester = 8

Akinropo’s TUGP for the 2nd Semester = 23

Akinropo’s TNU for the 2nd Semester = 8

Therefore, Akinropo’s CGPA at the end of the Course =

1stSemester TUGP +2nd semester TUGP = 32 +23=     55

1st Semester TNU +2nd semester TNU        8 + 8          16

Akinropo’s CGPA at the end of the course = 3.44
