DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING
The department started as Works and Services School in October 2004, and it was tasked with carrying out military courses for the Air Force Institute of Technology. It was later upgraded to Civil and Environmental Engineering Department in December 2008. The Department (CEED) is under the Deanship of the School of Ground and Communication Engineering.
The Department has the mandate of producing reliable and competent Civil Engineers as well as highly skilled artisans for all NAF works disciplines. Courses are delivered through lectures, tutorials, laboratory and field work. These are all in addition to scheduled educational visits to construction sites and operational areas like the NAF Hangar and airstrip, aimed at consolidating classroom works. The Department also conducts Civilian Courses which include a postgraduate Diploma in Construction Technology, Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, National Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology. For Military Courses, the Department Conducts Initial Works Officers Course (IWOC), Works Supervisors Course (WSC), Airmen Basic Upgraders Course (ABUC) and Airmen Advanced Upgraders Course (AAUC).
Civil Engineering Philosophy/ Guiding Principles
The department is one of the foundational departments in AFIT. The elevation of AFIT into a degree awarding institution in 2018 necessitated the review of its initial mandate from equipping and training the Air force personnel, into preparing a crop of young Nigerians to meet the need in infrastructure development, and contribute to narrowing the infrastructural deficit in the country. The development of human capacity and character of the students admitted is expected to primarily help Nigeria join the league of developed nations and to contribute globally.
Objectives
The objectives of the department are to:
- Promote critical learning skills among undergraduates, where they are able to initiate individual and group inventions.
- Furnish students with opportunities to undertake research that are vital to the Nigerian society.
- Provide the enabling environment where undergraduates are exposed to practise and theory in their programme, and transfer of knowledge and skills from experienced lecturers are encouraged.
- Mould the character of undergraduates for optimal service delivery and performance after their tertiary education.
Admission Requirements
Candidates are admitted into the degree programmes in any of the following three ways:
- The University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)
- Direct Entry
- Inter-University Transfer
UTME Entry Mode
In addition to acceptable passes in UTME, the minimum academic requirement is credit level passes in at least five subjects at O’Level in nationally recognized examination including English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and other acceptable science subject at not more than two sittings. It is also desirable for candidates to pass Further Mathematics and Technical Drawing at credit level, such candidates shall have added advantage.
Direct Entry Mode
For Direct Entry, in addition to ‘O’ Level requirements, candidate must have passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry at GCE ‘A’ level or equivalent. Holders of OND and HND at minimum of upper credit level are eligible for consideration for admission into 200 and 300 levels respectively.
Inter-University Transfer Mode
Students can transfer into 200-Level courses provided they have the relevant qualifications.
Course Requirements
Things to note:
- A core course must be taken and passed by all students before they can be awarded a degree.
- An Elective course may be taken by a student but could be substituted for another in the same category. Elective courses consist of a wide range of courses from which students must select a given number which they must pass before they can be awarded a degree. The elective courses could be from within or outside the department and/ or from within or outside the Faculty.
- A pre-requisite course is one which a student must take and pass before taking a particular course at a higher level.
- A unit of course is defined as one contact hour of lecture/tutorial or seminar.
- A student must take and pass a minimum of 15 and maximum of 24 credit units of courses in any given semester. A student must accumulate at least 30 units per level to qualify for graduation.
- All students for the five-year programme are required to take and pass General Studies (GST) courses before graduation.
- A student must obtain at least 75% attendance in each course registered for to be eligible to sit for the end of examinations in the course.
- To graduate, students must register for courses as specified in this handbook and accumulate a minimum of 150 credit units/hours in total. The minimum duration allowed for students to complete the programme is five academic sessions for candidates who enter through the UTME Mode. Direct Entry candidates admitted to the 200 level of the programmes will spend a minimum of four academic sessions while those admitted to the 300 level will spend a minimum of three years. The maximum duration allowed is 14 semesters or seven academic sessions for candidates who enter through UTME Mode, 12 semesters and 10 semesters for DE students who entered the programme in 200 level and 300 level respectively.
- A student whose Cumulative Grade Point Average is below 1.00 at the end of a particular year of study, earns a period of probation for one academic session. A student on probation is allowed to register for courses at the next higher level in addition to his/her probation level courses however, the maximum allowed units for registration would subsist and pre-requisite courses for the higher level courses must have been passed.
- A student whose Cumulative Grade Point Average is below 1.00 at the end of a particular year of probation would be withdrawn from the programme and hence withdrawn from the university if unable to transfer to other programmes within the university.

Note: · Students would be required to take at least 2 out of the 3 elective courses at this level. Students who still have credit unit allowance to take more courses are encouraged to do so if they so wish · Whilst the Undergraduate Research Project is graded in the 2nd Semester of the final year, the preparations for research project starts much earlier sometimes in the 2nd semester of the penultimate year. Students are encouraged to very quickly especially while on the SIWES III program, identify the area of Civil Engineering they would like to write a thesis and get a research topic if possible for due consideration. |
