200-LEVEL STUDENTS DONATE BOOKS TO AFIT LIBRARY

In a rare display of patriotism, 200-level students of Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), today, 20 October, 2023 donated books to the Institute’s library to motivate others to utilise the enormous intellectual resources available to them in the library.  The class representative of the students, Jibrin-Yekini Fawwaz, stated that the idea to donate the books came to them while attending classes on leadership skills. According to him, as students of Automotive Engineering, they were potential future leaders and it was imperative for them to develop the culture of giving back to society rather than taking from it.

The Provost of the Institute, Professor Mohammed Dauda, expressed delight at the gesture of the students. He noted that it was rare to see this selfless action where students come together to think of the collective wellbeing of all and not themselves alone. He stated that the act will encourage other students to embrace the proposed “plant-a-tree’ campaign” aimed at reducing the carbon footprint within the campus.

Earlier, the Commandant, AVM Sani Labaran Rabe, while receiving the books on behalf of the Institute, welcomed the novel idea by the students. He stated that, while students were not to contribute money for community service within the Institute, this gesture by the students was exemplary and confirms that their training on leadership was worthwhile and effective. He said that he was always encouraged when he came across students with exemplary character. He added that the books, which cut across engineering to climate change, would be useful to students over time within the Institute.
