Engr. Professor Auwal Kasim was born on the 21st March, 1972 in Municipal Local Government Area of Kano State. He obtained his First School leaving Certificate in 1984 at Kurmawa Primary School, Kano State, after which he proceeded to School for Arabic Studies, Kano (1984-1987) and Rumfa College, Kano (1987-1990) for Junior and Senior Secondary Education respectively. He was the overall best graduating Student, with Seven (7) distinctions, at Rumfa College in 1990. He graduated from Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 2000 with B.Eng. (Metallurgical Engineering) before he proceeded to do his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from 2001- 2002 in the same Department.
He was subsequently appointed an Assistant Lecturer in the
Department in August, 2002. He successful completed his MSc in Metallurgical Engineering (Process Metallurgy) in 2007. He was awarded Doctor of Philosophy in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in May 2013, after a research fellowship at the Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria, South Africa.
Professor Auwal has taught and supervised many
students at both postgraduate and undergraduate levels. He has over 40 publications in peer reviewed Journals and Conference Proceedings with a Google Scholar citation of 72 to his credit. His research interest is on Corrosion/degradation of Materials, Materials development and Characterization. The Governing Council of Ahmadu Bello University promoted Auwal KASIM to the exalted rank of Professor in 2020. With respect to grants, Professor Auwal secured a N19 Million Naira take-off grant for Mining Engineering programme of ABU Zaria from the Federal Ministry of Mines & Steel Development in addition to N53 Million from TETFund for the construction of a Foundry workshop in the University, among others.
Engineer Auwal has served in various administrative positions. These include the Head of Department, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Ahmadu Bello University from 2016-2020. He is also a member and Chair of many professional and academic committees within and outside the University; member, Board of Governors of ABU School of Basic & Remedial Studies and Project Monitoring Committee of ABU management. He has served as a member of ABU Governing Council committee on Budget Monitoring (BMC). He was the Board of Trustees Chairman of Orphans Care Initiative, Kano. He was the Director, Engineering Services of the Ahmadu Bello University Consultancy Services (ABUCONS) Nigeria Limited until his recent appointment as the Provost, Air Force Institute of Technology, Kaduna.
Professor Auwal is a Fellow of the Nigeria Corrosion Association (NiCA)
and the Nigerian Metallurgical Society (NMS). He is a registered member of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Nigeria Society of Mining Engineers (NSME), and a host of others. Professor Auwal is a member of the Scientific and Technical Committee of The Welding Federation (TWF), which is primarily Africa’s table solution for Materials industries with a critical focus on Welding Technology. His extracurricular activities include walking and watching films.
