President Muhammadu Buhari Signs the AFIT Bill into Law.

Since the establishment of AFIT, it has been financed almost solely by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF). This has restricted its activities due to limited funding. Given its new global outlook as a centre of excellence and a springboard to advancing technologies in the aviation industry coupled with the Institution’s contributions to the Government policy of providing technical assistance to our friendly countries, it became imperative for AFIT to directly get subvention from the Federation Account. This could only happen if AFIT was made a statutory body established and backed by law.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, disclosed in a statement made available to DAILY POST, PUNCH and THISDAY Newspapers on Wednesday, 6 December 2017 that the President signed three bills, earlier passed by the National Assembly, into law on Tuesday.
The statement reads ”
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, December 5, 2017 assented to the following Bills:
1. Federal College of Dental Technology and Therapy (Establishment) Bill,2017. The college to be sited in Enugu, is to provide courses of instruction leading to the award of degrees, diplomas and certificates in dental technology, dental therapy and related courses.
2. Air Force Institute of Technology of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2017. The Institute to be situated in Kaduna, is to give technical training to the personnel of the Nigerian Air Force and other services of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Nigerians and citizens of other African countries.
3. National Intelligence Agency Pensions (Establishment) Bill, 2017, is to administer the pensions scheme for personnel of the Agency, sequel to the exit of the Agency from the application of the Contributory Pension’s Scheme under the Pension’s Reform Act, 2004.
The benefits of the Act to the NAF includes relieving the NAF of funding problems as it would get budgetary allocations directly from the Federation Account as well as subventions from the NUC, NBTE, TETFUND and the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).
Additionally, AFIT will be able to enjoy support from International Research and development Organisations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), European Union, etc.
